Saving Grace: Season 3

I’m far from being a prude, but sometimes I’m still amazed at what cable can get away with (I still remember when Playtex had to show their bras on manikins).At first, I was reluctant to watch Saving Grace because the commercials portrayed Grace as a lost, angry rebel who finds redemption. But on a friend’s recommendation, I gave it a shot and was really impressed. This titillating show offers a little of everything. Grace is tough and indulgent, and makes no apologies for it. I find her to be one of the most real character on TV.Moving forward, I hope Grace isn’t somehow ’saved’ and thereby transformed the fact that she’s struggling between her demons and her faith is what makes her character identifiable, and the show a true pleasure to watch.

Weeds: Season 4

I haven’t been a dedicated fan of a TV series since Moonlighting back in the 80’s but I’m totally hooked on Weeds. Mary-Louise Parker plays the role of Nancy Botwin perfectly! As a widowed housewife trying to maintain an upper class lifestyle for herself and her two sons by selling weed, she obviously encounters problems maintaining her two roles….mother and drug dealer. Parker really emphasizes this “dual role” and she does it brilliantly….you’ll find yourself really feeling for the character and cheering for her all the way. Elizabeth Perkins in the role of Celia, Nancy’s close friend, is phenomenal. Watch her carefully in this show, her brilliant acting and her characters dry sarcastic nature provides much of the shows’ comedic value but it is sometimes very subtle. I personally think Perkins deserves a supporting Emmy for this one. In short, Jenji Kohan has scored enormous-time with Weeds and I hope it enjoys a good long run on Showtime….I’m definitely a dedicated fan! My only suggestion….episodes should be an hour long!

An American Affair

Apart from how boring this was, it was also historically inaccurate (apart from Kennedy’s assassination), but even still, setting this during that time frame is somewhat distracting.The main plot is generic, recycled and unrealistic to say the least. What are the chances of this kid actually coming across all the events that happen in this story? Not bloody likely.Still, though, there were a couple good scenes (the ending was surprisingly good), but just not enough to save a mediocre film. Mediocre, but watchable at least. I’d be more willing to give this a three and a half, but unfortunately I have to pick either three or four here on IMDb…so I’m leaning more towards a three.
